Hernias, POP, and SUI Surgeries Using Mesh Implants

In South Florida, it is not known how many patients have sought relief from a hernia or how many women have gone to their doctors for problems with pain in their abdomen resulting from shifted internal organs (POP) or the embarrassment of having urine release whenever they cough, laugh too hard, or sneeze (SUI). Hernias are a common malady and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of hernia repair surgeries are performed in South Florida each year.

As for POP and SUI, these are common female medical conditions that happen to women of all ages, but particularly to those who have borne children or who have had abdominal surgery. A pelvic organ prolapse (POP) involves the bladder, uterus, bowel, or rectum, dropping (“prolapses”) out of its normal position and putting pressure on the vagina. POP can be serious as it interferes with the ability to have normal bowel or bladder function as well as the ability to have sexual intercourse. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) involves the loss of control of bladder function when the body is stressed.

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI) are often dealt with through surgical remedies involving inserting surgical mesh into the female’s body to help and support the weakened area.

These are called “transvaginal mesh implants” (e.g., mesh “slings” ) that are expected to provide internal support to the internal organs and resolve the issues of SUI and POP.

Surgical Mesh Causing More Harm to the Patient

Hernia surgeries, as well, often use surgical mesh as part of the internal hernia repair. These operations have resulted in many complications after surgery however, where the hernia patient reports issues including:

• Adhesions (loops of the intestines adhere to the mesh)
• Blood vessels are compromised
• Nerves are damaged
• Internal organs near to the mesh are harmed.

Sadly, female patients likewise have not been helped in many of the transvaginal mesh procedures. Instead, they have suffered even more as the transvaginal mesh implants have resulted in severe injuries and physical complications like:

• Infections
• Urinary tract problems
• Sudden and severe bleeding
• Internal organs being pierced or perforated
• Painful sex (dyspareunia)
• Release of the mesh implant out of the body (rejection of the implant).

Surgical Mesh Targeted as Dangerous Products

In the mid-2000s, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first began warning providers and the public about the dangers of surgical mesh and transvaginal mesh as injuries and problems resulting from the surgical impacts of mesh to resolve POP ans SUI were become more and more prolific.

In 2008, the FDA issued a formal warning that in the past 36 month period it had recorded over 1000 different patients who had been harmed from the use of transvaginal mesh in a POP or SUI surgical treatment where the mesh was placed into the body transavginally (the idea being this was a safer surgery with less invasiveness than other approaches).

Patients with transvaginal mesh implants in POP or SUI surgeries were suffering from things like:

1. Pain
2. Problems urinating
3. Incontinence (recurrence of the SUI condition)
4. Infection
5. Bleeding
6. Recurrence of the prolapse (POP) condition
7. Perforation of the bowel, bladder, or blood vessels
8. Painful sex (dyspareunia)

Doctors were have to perform a second surgery to remove the transvaginal mesh implant, as well as dealing with infections, absesses, hematomas, and more that resulted from the mesh implant. Sometimes these surgeries involved hysterectomies, where the female patient lost the ability to bear children.

Transvaginal Mesh Manufacturers Sued by Women Harmed by Products

The manufacturers of these surgical transvaginal mesh implants that have caused women such pain and suffering and permanent damage include the following companies and today, thousands of lawsuits have been filed around the country by women seeking justice for the harm they have suffered from transvaginal mesh procedures:

• American Medical Systems
• Boston Scientific
• C.R. Bard
• Coloplast
• Ethicon
• Johnson & Johnson
• Mentor
• Neomedic

Many of these lawsuits have been filed in federal courts and have been consolidated in multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. Other plaintiffs have filed their claims in state courts as individual claimants.
